Partner Ben Hiatt Recently Awarded

Ben was recently awarded with colleagues Francois Dionot, founder of L’Academie de Cuisine and Benjamin Velasquez, Executive Chef of Carlos Rosario International Charter School as honorees of the inaugural Culinary Arts Visionary award from Educated Eats, the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW)’s Education Foundation for their leadership in shaping the next generation of culinary professionals.

Tonic Restaurant

The Optimum Group was recently retained to provide project manager / owner’s representative services to assist Tonic in the development and selection of related kitchen services including architectural, kitchen design, engineering and construction. With this role, The Optimum Group will organize, plan, coordinate, direct and efficiently administer the development and construction of a renovation of both its preparation and service kitchens.  In addition, Optimum has been contracted to carry out periodic food safety and sanitation audits on a quarterly basis, writing and submitting its report when completed.

Van Ness Main Street

The Optimum Group was contracted to evaluate the whole street-front restaurant scene along the corridor in Washington, DC., on Connecticut Avenue, from Albemarle to Van Ness, for the purpose of assisting the eight (8) existing restaurants in improving their performance and increasing the creativity of the foods  they offer to customers. Van Ness Main Street is the organization charged with the responsibility to re-enliven business in this highly residential neighborhood. We studied all restaurants and other Connecticut Avenue businesses to assess what the problems were, dined at all of restaurants and made recommendations to owners and managers after observing their operations in some detail as to how to increase revenue and improve the quality of service. The client has received a full report of our findings and has indicated that they want Optimum to stay involved going forward as these and other changes are being made.

American Association of Retired People (AARP)

In conjunction with the architectural firm OBX and The Design Difference, a kitchen design firm located in Washington, DC, the Optimum Group was recently engaged by AARP to perform a review and analysis of the existing AARP employee cafeteria and kitchen operations located in their Washington DC corporate headquarters.    The purpose of this independent analysis is to assess the current operation and incorporate the findings and recommendations into the programming for a proposed, renovated foodservice facility.  In addition, several test fit schematic designs will be created to gauge the viability of the proposed spaces in terms of overall size, shape, location, primary and secondary adjacencies of related functions (the kitchen in relation to the servery, catering, vertical transportation, loading dock, for example), and flow of product, staff, and customers throughout the foodservice system within this building.  

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

The Optimum Group was recently awarded a contract to implement with its architectural partner, OKKS of Chevy Chase, MD the final programing and construction design documents from an assessment and re-conceptualization of its cafeterias and institutional foodservice operations completed last year. The new employee cafeteria design is expected to result in a new creative design that will increase efficiency and modernize and improve dining offerings to the campus population of more than 3100 permanent and temporary staff.  

Open City Café Opens at the Washington National Cathedral

The Optimum Group along with the Washington National Cathedral, helped to select the new operator, Open City Inc. and project manage the implementation and opening of a new 47-seat café in what used to be referred to as the Herb Cottage (aka The Baptistry) in December. It has become a very popular site for visitors to the Cathedral, the students and faculties of schools on the grounds of the National Cathedral, as well as Cathedral staff.

The brand new cafeteria at the Marriott Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland has just been opened and The Optimum has a new contract with and has been asked to assist in the evaluation of its performance, starting in January 2014. This will assist Marriott in ensuring that it's employee feeding operation in that building and in Gaithersburg, MD, is the best in the industry. Optimum is proud to have been asked to conduct  these audits.

Ever wonder what it is like to feed 3000 people a day? The Optimum Group has just been awarded by the corporate office of Marriott International to evaluate all their dining facilities at their headquarters in Bethesda, MD. The contract will, initially, extend over the next three months and will result in Marriott learning a great deal about its contracted services to Sodexo.

The FBI retained The Optimum Group in the middle of June to complete an analysis of its document to rebid the foodservice contract for the large FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. We were able to provide them valuable information on its Ability One contracts for use for their upcoming 5-year contract.
